I have never been happy with our point and shoot camera! Now don't get me wrong...it our own fault we don't like it - we decided to get a very small one which means you give up all manual control. The best control we have over shutter speed and aperture is selecting "beach" mode or "aquarium" mode. Yuck!
Fortunately, a guy I work with forwarded on some software that runs on Canon cameras that opens up the functionallty of the camera via menus! It does this and doesn't even modify your firmware on your camera...it really acts like software running on your camera. I've only played with it for a few minutes...but so far I'm excited about it and I may even enjoy my camera a little more.
Here is the link to the "software": http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
Here is one hint from their site though:Am I likely to be interested in CHDK?
The enhanced capabilities that CHDK provides are most likely to be of interest to experienced photographers - if you believe that your Canon PowerShot camera already has more features than you will ever need, you probably won't be interested in CHDK.
Past my bedtime...CCV
